Our Progress

Updates on progress at the Mercy Children's Centre in Kenya.

Thursday, October 19, 2006

The two schools were started by a local teacher, Charles Ouma, in 2003. About ten other individuals currently volunteer their time as teachers at the two schools (a list of our volunteers is here). The Mercy center church, a small neighborhood church near the school, joined the effort and, along with the volunteers themselves, has been providing a small amount of funding to help pay for basic expenses. However, this has become more difficult as the total number of children has swelled from an initial 25 in each school to 75, the absolute maximum that each facility can accommodate.

In spring of 2006, The Fulton family (American expats living in Nairobi) began to donate some of their time and money, in particular paying for lunches. They also teach there occasionally, and recently helped purchase new uniforms and shoes for about 50 kids at the Nairobi school. They are also helping to develop this website and to search for other potential donors.

A list of our specific needs/costs and what is currently being provided is here.
